Omar Mosaad put in arguably the best performance of the tournament so far as he played with control and precision to frustrate Swiss opponent Nicolas Müller and secure his place in the quarter-finals of the 2016 J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions, PSA World Series tournament today.
Under the chandeliers in Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall it was Müller who started brighter of the two, opening up an early lead in the first game during a spell that looked to bode well for his hopes of springing a surprise upset but Mosaad, the World No.4, quickly settled and reeled off nine consecutive points to take the first game in emphatic fashion and set down a marker for what was to come.
The powerful Egyptian, known as the ‘Hammer of Thor’, continued to dominate proceedings in the second game, playing with immaculate length to double his advantage 11-4 before Müller managed a revival, showing his calibre as he came back strong in the third. The Swiss champion, learning from his early mistakes, adjusted his approach and played with increased patience to eek out mistakes from the big Egyptian. It still wasn’t straight forward though as he had to content with a determined Mosaad, saving two match balls to force the match into a fourth game.
But the physical and mental exertion of the third took a toll as Mosaad restored his dominance, controlling proceedings again in the fourth to take the match 11-5, 11-4, 12-14, 11-7.
“I was very focused today and ready for the match because I really wanted to make sure I made it to the quarter-finals of this great tournament,” said Mosaad.
“It’s a great place to play in and I’m very happy that I got the win. He put me in trouble in the third game but I managed to re-focus and I’m happy to win in four.”
 Omar Mosaad (EGY) bt Nicolas Mueller (SUI) 3-1: 11-5, 11-4, 12-14, 11-7 (73m)
