Marwan Elshorbagy goes for the backhand against Borja Golan

Colombia Update: Elshorbagy Battles Past Golan to Reach Last Eight

World No.10 Marwan Elshorbagy came through an extremely hard-fought fixture against Spanish No.1 Borja Golan in the first round of the inaugural SquashColombia Open to secure his spot in the quarter-final of the PSA M100 tournament.

After taking the opening two games by the narrowest of margins, Elshorbagy looked to be set for safe passage into the next round before a tenacious Golan fought back to level proceedings. However, Elshorbagy refocused and overturned a strong lead from Golan in the fifth to wrap up a brutal 11-9, 13-11, 7-11, 2-11, 11-8 victory and move through to the last eight.

A focused Golan came back out all guns blazing in game three and rattled off a number of rip-roaring drives to open up the court and build up a strong points cushion which enabled the World No.19 to claw a game back.

Golan’s resurgence continued into the fourth as he brought the game back to all square for the loss of just two points but he let a 7-2 lead slip in the fifth to hand the initiative back to Elshorbagy, who converted his first match ball to seal the win and set up a quarter-final clash with either Scotland’s Alan Clyne or home favourite Miguel Angel Rodriguez.

Result: First Round: SquashColombia Open 2016
[5] Marwan ElShorbagy (EGY) bt Borja Golan (ESP) 3-2: 11-9, 13-11, 7-11, 2-11, 11-8 (93m)
