England’s Sarah-Jane Perry came through her first round encounter at the 2016 Windy City Open in Chicago courtesy of a 3-0 win over Welsh qualifier Deon Saffrey.
Perry control duh opening two games with ease as she opened up a comfortable lead but she was soon forced into defensive mode as Saffrey rallied in the third to take advantage of a relaxed Perry and open up a 5-1 lead. Spurred into action Perry raised her game and notched up 6 consecutive points but soon found herself two game balls down.
She again managed to rallied to force a tie-break which she eventually sealed 13-11 to move into round two.
“I lost a bit of accuracy in the third and my game plan, which was to keep it away from the middle, fell down a bit,” said Perry.
“I’m happy to go through and I’m up against Nicol David now. I haven’t felt overwhelmed against her but on the other hand, I have never managed to get a game out of her yet but I’ve been working with a new coach for a few month now, Sue Wright, so maybe we can come up with a new game plan.”
