WindyCity Update: Gohar Eliminates Duncalf

[8] Nouran Gohar (EGY) bt [13] Jenny Duncalf (ENG) 3-0: 11-9, 11-9, 11-4 (27m)

Nouran Gohar secured an important win over former World No.2 Jenny Duncalf to move into the last eight of the 2016 Windy City Open after withstand late surges from the Englishwoman in all three games to take it 3-0.

Duncalf started strong in the first two games before falling away in the middle stages to find herself facing multiple game balls in both. In an exact replica of the first game the talented Englishwoman fought back from 5-10 down to get within one point of forcing a tie-break only to see opportunity ripped from her hands by the hard-hitting World Junior Champion to leave her down 2-0 on the scoreboards and so close yet so far from extending the match.

In the third, with Duncalf somewhat consigned to defeat, Gohar blasted to a 10-0 lead. A tinned attempt at a low kill gave Duncalf reprieve but it was short lived as the Egyptian struck shortly thereafter to end the match after 27 minutes,

Key Moment
Gohar’s ability to stave off Duncalf’s fightback in both the first and second games to seal both games when receiving serve at 10-9 were crucial. Failure to take either one would have shifted the dynamic.

Shot Of The Match
Jenny Duncalf showed off some impressive dexterity of hand to play a delicate drop shot into the front left hand corner after reacting quickly to a powerfully struck drive which was coming across her at pace to go 5-4 up in the first game.

Player Comments
Nouran Gohar: “When I was 9 I remember watching Jenny playing in Egypt. She’s a tough player with great soft hands and it was a hard match but I’m glad I won.

“Even when you are 10-6 up the game isn’t finished – she’s a real fighter so I had to concentrate on each point and play to the very last point.”
