BritOpen Update: Sherbini Soars Into British Open Second Round

In-form Egyptian Nour El Sherbini, winner of the Tournament of Champions in January and runner-up in last month’s Windy City Open, breezed through her first round encounter with Nicolette Fernandes of Guayana to secure a second round berth at the 2016 Allam British Open in impressive fashion.

The 20-year-old has been in scintillating form over the past two months and she continued to dominate on court against Fernandes, taking just 32 minutes to storm through and set up an encounter with Hong Kong’s Liu Tsz-Ling, who upset Jenny Duncalf to reach the second round.

Fernandez put up a typically tenacious fight but was powerless to do anything to half the charge of the player many are tipping as a dark horse to triumph this week.

“I’m definitely feeling happy after that result,” said El Sherbini.

“When i saw the draw I knew that it would be a tough first round match as Nicolette is never easy but I surprised myself with how well I played and I’m happy – it’s a good start.

“Every tournament I play I’m more confident than the one before. I’ve had some bad memories at the British Open so hopefully this year I can overturn them and make it a good year for me.”
