Egyptian World No.12 Nour El Tayeb made a winning return from a six-month injury lay off at the Naza PSA Women’s World Championship with a comfortable straight games victory over Hong Kong’s Liu Tsz-Ling in Kuala Lumpur’s National Squash Centre in Malaysia.
El Tayeb, who sustained her injury during an impressive quarter-final victory over compatriot Raneem El Welily in October’s US Open, came out all guns blazing in her match with Liu and played a tactically astute match as she boasted well at opportune moments to gain a number of points in quick succession.
After going two games down, Liu stepped up the court to try and cut off El Tayeb’s clever shots but she was unable to halt the 23-year-old’s rhythm and El Tayeb stormed away to claim an 11-6, 11-7, 11-3 triumph in 24 minutes.
“This was my first match in six months so it was very important to talk to my coaches before the match,” said El Tayeb.
“They were trying to tell me how to prepare because it was my first PSA tournament in a while. I knew what to expect, I watched my opponent play so I kind of knew how to play her. It didn’t make things easier but I was more aware of how good she is.
“More importantly, I was focused on my game and how to play well. I tried to forget about my shoulder and, thankfully, I think that I did well for the first match. Hopefully I can build things up form here and play even better in the next match.
“I’m taking things match-by-match with no expectations.”
