El Gouna Update: Gawad Comes Through Against Cuskelly

Karim Abdel Gawad gained revenge for his defeat to Ryan Cuskelly in the final of the 2015 Bluenose Classic as he downed the Australian 3-1 to move into the second round of the EL Gouna International.

Despite dropping the first game, which included a lengthy delay due to a blood injury to Cuskelly, Gawad played with immaculate attacking qualities from all corners of the court as he made light work of the difficult, humid conditions to record an impressive win that bolsters his hopes of securing a lucrative place at the World Series Finals.

“I really felt it was extremely hard conditions today,” said Gawad. “I was getting tired, but I saw him getting tired too and that gave me confidence in the third.

“I know I put a lot of work in his legs in the second and third game. The conditions were difficult but you have to play in any conditions if you want to be a good player.

“I played Fares in the British Open and it was very tough – like all our matches. I’m looking forward to it tomorrow, on a different court, and let’s see what happens and may the better player win.”

Result:
[6] Karim Abdel Gawad (EGY) bt Ryan Cuskelly (AUS) 3-1: 8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-5 (63m)
