England’s Sarah-Jane Perry joined compatriot Laura Massaro in the last 16 of the Naza PSA Women’s World Championship with a routine straight games win over United States player Olivia Blatchford.
Perry looked full of confidence as she utilised her rangy six foot physique to great effect by picking a number of attempted drops from Blatchford, who is a full foot shorter than Perry, and cantered to victory in the opening game. A multitude of errors from Blatchford on the backhand side then handed Perry a comfortable 2-0 lead.
The Birmingham-born World No.13 stayed in cruise control in the third and final game as yet more errors came off the racket of Blatchford and she recorded the win by an 11-4, 11-6, 11-6 scoreline to ensure that she will take on World No.4 Camille Serme for a place in the quarter-final.
“I thought I did well to control most of the rallies and I played the way I wanted to play,” said Perry.
“Most of the time, I managed that and when I didn’t, that’s when it started to get a little bit frantic but I managed to get back into it, so that’s good.
“I’m trying to play to my strengths and I’m one of the tallest players on the tour, while Olivia’s one of the shortest. We’ve both got different advantages so I tried to play to mine, which is my height, to dominate the court and use my reach. We’ve played a few times and she has definitely beaten me before so I was happy to be off in four.
“I’ve never quite got to the quarter-final. There’s no pressure and it was a close game that we [Perry and Serme] played a couple of month’s ago.
“The match tomorrow is going to be the focus for me. I’m just outside of the top ten so it would be nice to break in, but, at the moment, I’m just trying to focus on how I’m playing. I’m trying to make some changes and implement those rather than focusing on results and I’ve been working with my new coach [Sue Rose] for a couple of months now.”
