Miguel Angel Rodriguez produced a spell binding display to soar into the quarterfinals of the El Gouna International courtesy of an emphatic 3-0 win over Hong Kong’s Leo Au.
Playing on the traditional court at the Mövenpick hotel, Rodriguez countered everything that Au, who played attacking squash from start to finish, could throw at him in a sharp performance that will bolster the Colombian’s hopes of reaching the latter stages of the tournament.
“Leo’s strategy was to slow down the pace and lift the ball,” said Rodriguez.
“So he was very accurate, his shots were very tight to the wall but I just tried to focus on my own game plan and play a very aggressive squash.
“We are good friends, we used to train with David Palmer in Orlando, we have the same kind of game. But today I really didn’t want to give him any confidence or opportunity to take a game and I’m happy with my performance today.”
