WWC Update: Serme Secures Quarters Berth After Seeing Off Perry

French No.1 Camille Serme produced a solid performance to dispatch England’s Sarah-Jane Perry in the second round of the Naza PSA Women’s World Championship and seal a quarter-final spot in Bukit Jalil, Malaysia.

Serme, who prevailed in the pair’s most recent meeting in February’s Cleveland Classic semi-final, put Perry under huge amounts of pressure with a barrage of fast-paced shots seeing her thunder to a two-game lead.

Perry responded in the third by forcing Serme into some difficult positions and that approach was initially successful as she took three of the first four points on offer. But Serme upped the intensity by injecting yet more pace into proceedings and, despite a few errors creeping into her otherwise solid style of play, she recorded the win with an 11-5, 11-7, 11-6 margin of victory to ensure she will take on World Junior Champion Nouran Gohar in the last eight – against whom she has lost the last two matches, with the most recent of those coming in the semi-final of last month’s Allam British Open.

“I felt better today on court, I felt I moved better and saw the ball better, even from the back to the front,” said Serme.

“It’s good because tomorrow it’s going to be a tough battle. It’s good I played her [Nouran] a month ago because I have learned a lot from that last match. I trained with a lot of guys at home, just to get used to the fast-pace against someone who hits the ball as hard as she does.

“I feel prepared for this month and I would love some revenge. She beat me the last two times and this is the World Championship so I definitely want to win this match tomorrow. I have been training with my brother [Men’s World No.39 Lucas] at home and he started hitting the ball so hard for just one game. It’s not his game at all so at the end he was asking how she does that.

“He was so tired just hitting the ball hard all the time, but I guess she is just used to it because she has done it her whole career.”
