Australia’s World No.24 Ryan Cuskelly confirmed his place in the second round of the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions after he powered past USA’s World No.91 Christopher Gordon in straight-games.
The Australian No.1 put in a dominant performance in his eighth meeting against the American as he powered to an 11-7, 11-8, 11-4 victory in 40 minutes.
Cuskelly will take on Egypt’s World No.2 Mohamed ElShorbagy in the second round on Saturday January 11.
“It’s sad to see Cameron [Pilley] go,” said Cuskelly afterwards. “I travelled around the world with him and he’s one of my best mates.
“He had a great career and unfortunately, I might be quick after him. There’s not many Australians coming through which is sad, there’s a big hole in Squash Australia. We used to be such a strong nation the last 30 years, hopefully the young guys can see us old boys and get some motivation somehow.”
Ryan Cuskelly (AUS) bt [WC] Christopher Gordon (USA) 3-0: 11-7, 11-8, 11-4 (40m)
