Gaynor Cup: Sobhy Leads Seeds Through to Quarter-Finals

It was plain sailing for the top eight seeds on day two of the Bahl and Gaynor Cincinnati Gaynor Cup, with United States No.1 Amanda Sobhy leading the way as she dispatched Canada’s Nicole Bunyan to reach the quarter-finals of the PSA World Tour Bronze event.

Sobhy, the World No.8 from Boston, overcame World No.65 Bunyan by an 11-5, 12-10, 11-1 margin in 23 minutes. Bunyan only made a handful of errors throughout the match, but couldn’t handle Sobhy’s pace as the Harvard-graduate advanced to the last eight, where she will take on Belgium’s No.5 seed Nele Gilis.

Gilis eased through to the last eight after her round two opponent, Egypt’s Menna Nasser, failed to really get going after sustaining an ankle injury the night before. She was clearly hampered by the problem and fell to an 11-6, 11-6, 11-0 defeat.

No.2 seed Sarah-Jane Perry also booked her spot in the quarter-finals with a comfortable win over Egypt’s Mayar Hany in the final match of the day. Hany made life uncomfortable for the World No.7 in the opening two games, with the scores locked at one game apiece after some fine attacking efforts from the lower-ranked player.

However, the pressure soon told as Perry controlled games three and four to seal a win which will see her play Malaysia’s Low Wee Wern in the quarter-finals. The former World No.5 kept her opponent, Australia’s Sarah Cardwell, moving into all corners and was awarded with an 11-7, 11-5, 11-4 triumph.

United States No.2 Olivia Blatchford Clyne also advanced after beating Canada’s Nikki Todd and will face the younger Gilis sister, Tinne, for a place in the semis after she got the better of France’s Enora Villard. The other quarter-final will pit Hania El Hammamy and Rowan Elaraby against each other. They have won the last three World Junior Championship trophies between them and beat Emilia Soini and Nada Abbas, respectively.

The quarter-finals begin at 15:00 (GMT-5) on Saturday February 22, with live scoring available here. The action will also be streamed live on the Gaynor Cup YouTube Channel.
