Egypt’s World No.7 Marwan ElShorbagy put on a masterclass at the Mall of Arabia as he defeated World No.5 Paul Coll to go top of Group B in the men’s CIB PSA World Tour Finals.
Both players made superb returns to the court in Manchester with semi-final finishes at the first tournament back following the COVID-19 enforced suspension of the PSA World Tour, but it was ElShorbagy who looked full of confidence today in an assured performance.
He lost out to the Kiwi when they met in the PSA Men’s World Championship semis last November, but got his revenge with an 11-6, 11-5 victory in 43 minutes.
Coll is one of the fittest players on the PSA World Tour but the 28-year-old was outwitted today in Cairo following a tactically astute performance from ‘The Jackal’, who goes above Welshman Joel Makin at the summit of Group B.
He will take on Makin tomorrow evening.
“Every match you play in this event is really hard,” ElShorbagy said.
“I played Paul in the semi-finals of the World Championship last November, so I knew it was going to be a tough match. The conditions were really tough, it was really bouncy which could suit both of us but maybe I dealt with it a little bit better than him today.
“But I’m really happy overall with the way I played. There are maybe a couple of things I need to improve but I’m really looking forward to my match tomorrow. You can always get better, maybe I was a little bit edgy at the beginning of the first game.
“I’ll watch the match and I’ll decide what was wrong, but overall I would say I’m happy because I won in two games which hopefully will help me in the next match.”
