World Tour Finals: El Sherbini Shines Against Perry

Reigning World Champion Nour El Sherbini showed her class in her final match of the group stages at the CIB PSA World Tour Finals, as she maintained a perfect 100% record, winning all three of her matches in straight games.

Having already beaten New Zealand’s Joelle King and compatriot Nouran Gohar in her first two group matches, El Sherbini had already secured her place in the last four of the season-ending event, but added the final touches to an impressive group stage campaign in this one.

The ‘Warrior Princess’ got off to a flier in this one, winning nine of the first twelve points, as she asserted her dominance. Perry threatened a comeback, and saved a game ball, but the Egyptian took the first game in front of an adoring home crowd.

She also raced out into a lead in the second game, but the Englishwoman was able to find the right length to trouble the former World No.1. Perry was able to turn the game around, and she even had a game ball to take the match into a decider.

However, El Sherbini was able to save it, before then taking the next two points to win the second game 12-10, claiming a third straight 2-0 victory to secure the maximum 12 points from her group stage campaign.

“It is a perfect start for me to win all three matches. Any of them I could play in the final of a Platinum event so I am really happy that I have won the three matches 2-0 each,” El Sherbini admitted.

“I always tried to be focussed and be ready. In one season, SJ beat me three times, so I had to prepare mentally for this match. I was just trying to focus like it was any other match, not like I was already qualified. I tried to relax and get used to the court, and now I am looking ahead to the semis.”
