Marwan ElShorbagy had assured himself of a place in the semi-finals of the CIB PSA World Tour Finals after a straight games victory over Welsh No.1 Joel Makin. The Egyptian has a 100% record so far in the event.
Surprisingly, the pair had only met once before on the PSA World Tour, with that clash coming at the inaugural DPD Open last year, where the Egyptian won after an 83 minute, five-game battle.
It was ‘the Jackal’ who started the better in this one, after a succession of lengthy rallies. He managed to push out into a lead, but started to unravel slightly due to unfavourable court conditions, which saw him slipping slightly more than the Welshman. However, he maintained his composure to take the advantage in the match.
The second salvo saw ElShorbagy keep hold of that momentum, and he was consistently in front of the Welshman throughout the entire game. He won out in just under 50 minutes to become the first man to secure a semi-final spot from Group B.
“I am really happy with the way I dealt with the conditions today. It was really slippery and I had to deal with my movement,” ElShorbagy explained.
“I watched Simon [Rösner] and Diego [Elias] last night and I didn’t understand why Diego was not happy, but I understand that now. I wanted to deal with the conditions, maybe a bit better than Diego did yesterday, so I am happy to win in two games against a very tough opponent and, just really happy with the way I am playing. I haven’t dropped any games yet.
“I will enjoy watching tomorrow’s matches and to find out who my opponent will be in the semi-final. The gameplan will change depending who it is. I will be regroup and keep doing what I am doing. I have worked really hard this summer so results like this don’t surprise me. Maybe the way I played in Manchester was disappointing, so I am looking forward to improving on that here.”
