PSA Statement

The Professional Squash Association (PSA) can confirm that Mohamed Abouelghar and Mohamed ElSherbini have tested positive for COVID-19 following a PCR test taken yesterday (October 6) prior to the CIB Egyptian Squash Open.

Before joining the ‘tournament bubble’, all players are required to take a PCR test prior to travelling to the event hotel as well as another PCR test the day before the tournament begins. Further tests are then taken every four days during tournaments in accordance with PSA’s strict COVID-19 protocols.

Following their positive tests, neither Abouelghar nor ElSherbini have entered the bubble or travelled to the hotel and both players will now self-isolate for 14 days in line with government restrictions in Egypt. Both players have also withdrawn from the Egyptian Open, which will be held in front of the Cairo’s Great Pyramid of Giza between October 10-17.

They are asymptomatic at this stage and everyone at PSA sends their best wishes to both Abouelghar and ElSherbini.

“It is devastating for both players concerned that they can no longer compete in the CIB Egyptian Open and we are thankful both are currently asymptomatic and feeling well,” said PSA COO Lee Beachill.

“Our pre-event protocols are in place to protect all the players who are due to compete in this event and this reaffirms the importance of such protocols.”

As a result, World No.17 Zahed Salem takes Abouelghar’s spot in the 9/16 seeded positions and will now receive a bye into round two. Mexico’s Arturo Salazar takes Salem’s 17/32 seeded position and will play USA’s Shahjahan Khan.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s Mazen Gamal and Spain’s Bernat Jaume enter the draw and they will take on Frenchman Victor Crouin and World No.18 Mostafa Asal, respectively.

The CIB Egyptian Squash Open, PSA Platinum tournament will be shown live on SQUASHTV (rest of world), ON Sport (Egypt), the official Facebook page of the PSA World Tour (excluding Europe and Japan) and multiple mainstream broadcast channels around the world.
