Hania El Hammamy celebrates after beating Tesni Evans in Cairo

CIB Black Ball Open QFs: El Hammamy Downs Evans

Defending Black Ball Squash Open champion Hania El Hammamy had to recover from going a game down against Welsh No.1 Tesni Evans, before booking her place in the last four of the PSA World Tour Gold level tournament in Cairo.

The 20-year-old, who won the event when it was a Platinum level tournament back in March, came out firing in the opening game, winning the first five points, but the Welshwoman came fighting back.

She took nine of the next 13 points to level the game, before then saving a game ball to send it into a tie-break. Evans took it 12-10, and to the surprise of the crowd in Cairo, went a game up on the World No.5.

She continued her momentum into the second game, but El Hammamy found her range again, and was able to reel off some quick points in the middle part of the game, going through to level the match.

The Welshwoman then seemed to tire over the course of the third and fourth games, allowing El Hammamy to advance to the semi-finals of the Gold level tournament, and extending her winning run at the Black Ball Sporting Club to nine matches.

“Definitely, there is a little bit of pressure on me this tournament [as defending champion]. Definitely tough matches and I am really happy to get through to the semi-finals,” the Egyptian said.

“First of all, I just want to recover for tomorrow’s match. Of course, while I am watching, I will be trying to figure out their weaknesses and that is something that I really have to do before playing anybody.

“I am coping with it [foot problem] and I am really happy that I managed to win in four. Tesni is a tough opponent, very talented, very tricky. I really had to stick to my gameplan, try to not to run too much and I think in the first game, I was up and then I lost my focus and then she outplayed me.”
