It was an exciting day in the quarter finals of the Esporte Clube Pinheiros Open, as the top three seeds all had to go the distance, eventually surviving five-game battles to make it through to the semis of the Challenger 5 level competition.
Top seed Guilherme Melo came up against No.5 seed Andres Herrera in the last eight of the tournament, and he found himself behind twice in the match, after the Colombian won both the first and third games of their contest. However, Brazil’s Melo was able to fight back on both occasions, and he went on to win the fifth game 11-7 to advance to the semis, where he will face No.4 seed Alejandro Enriquez, after the Guatemalan downed compatriot Ricardo Toscano in straight games.
In the bottom half of the draw, No.2 seed Diego Gobbi was on court for almost 90 minutes in his quarter final, eventually defeating Paraguayan No.1 Francesco Marcantonio. After losing the first, the Brazilian won the second on a tie-break, and then led 2-1 before Marcantonio pegged him back to take the match into a deciding game. It went all the way to a tie-break, with Gobbi finally winning in five after 87 minutes of action.
The Brazilian will now face No.3 seed, and Guatemalan No.1, Josue Enriquez in the semis, after he came from behind to defeat the unseeded Jeremias Azana. The Argentinian had caused an upset on day one, and after three games, it looked like he might do the same on day two. However, Enriquez fought back to win the fourth 11-9, before taking the fifth game as well, to advance through to the last four of the competition.
The semi-finals of the Esporte Clube Pinheiros Open will take place on Saturday, May 14, with the last four going head-to-head for places in Sunday’s finals in Sao Paulo.
